Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

 

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION
*A CANDIDATE WHO HAS PASSED 10+2 EXAMINATION IN FOUR COMPULSORY SUBJECTS (Including English) FROM UNIVERSITY/BOARD RECOGNISED BY LAW CAN SEEK ADMISSION.
*STUDENTS WHO ARE PLACED UNDER COMPARTMENT IN ANY EXAMINATION OF ANOTHER BOARD/UNIVERSITY SHALL NOT APPLY EVEN FOR PROVISIONAL ADMISSION TO THE NEXT HIGHER CLASS IN THE COLLEGE.
Note: Rules regarding eligibility conditions for admission to B.A/B.Com/B.Sc 1st year are subject to change as per the directions of H.P. Govt. /H.P.U. Shimla.
For B.A./B.Com. 1st year
Age Limit: An Applicant must not be more than 23 years (25 years for girls) of age as on 1st July of the year 2022 i.e. must not have born earlier to 01-07-1999 (01-07-1997 for girls). Only the Vice-Chancellor shall have the power of granting age relaxation up to a maximum of 6 months. For SC/ST students however the age limit will be raised by 3 years.
Minimum pass percentage for admission in different faculty is given as:        
 (i) B.A 1st (Bachelor of Arts)
A student seeking admission to B.A 1st should have 35% marks in any stream in 10+2.
(ii) B.Com 1st (Bachelor of Commerce)
a) 40% for those who have passed examination under Commerce group at +2 level
b) 45% for others but the candidate must have passed Mathematics/ Economics as compulsory subject with 45% marks at his /her +2 level.
c) There is relaxation of 5% marks for SC/ST students for admission to Commerce faculty.

It is an instructional package developed to suit the needs of students to keep pace with the developments in higher education worldwide taking him/her out of isolated compartmentalized learning environment which clearly indicates for each level of certification the learning effort required on the part of the student in terms of credits to be earned as well as participation in instructional hours to be spent through either regular mode or through distance education mode.
Outline:
1. Core Courses: taken up by the student as his/her primary course and is studied compulsorily to fulfill thecore requirement. The Core Courses will be of 6 credits each.
2. Elective Courses: These are chosen from a pool of courses and which may be very specific or specialized or advanced or supportive to the discipline/ subject of study or which provides an extended scope or which enables an exposure to some other discipline/ subject/ domain or nurtures the candidate’s proficiency / skill.
The Elective Courses will include:
• Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Courses: Elective courses may be offered by the main discipline /subject of study is referred to as Discipline Specific Elective. The University / Institute may also offerdiscipline related Elective courses of interdisciplinary nature (to be offered by main discipline /subject of study).These courses will be of 6 credits each. These courses may be discipline related and/or interdisciplinary in nature.
• Generic Elective (GE) Courses: An elective course chosen generally from an unrelated discipline /subject, with an intention to seek exposure is called a Generic Elective. A core course offered in adiscipline / subject may be treated as an elective by other discipline / subject and vice versa and suchelectives may also be referred to as Generic Elective.
3. (a) Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC)Ability Enhancement Courses are of two
types – Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC). The AECC courses are mandatory courses based upon the content that leads to knowledgeenhancement:
  • Environment Science
  • English/ Hindi/ MIL Communication.
All these are mandatory courses for obtaining a degree in the concerned subject. These courses are mandatory for all disciplines.
(b) Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) courses are value-based and/ or skill-based and are aimed at providing hands-on-training, competencies, skills etc. The main purpose of these courses is to provide students life-skills in hands-on mode so as to increase their employability.

Total 132 credits are required for pass course which consist of 72 credits of core courses, 24 credits of AECC+SEC and 36 credits of DSE/GE. The SEC WILL BE OF THE DSC-1 and GEC will be unrelated to DSC
 
  • Core Course (12 Papers of 6 credits each)-Two papers – English, Two papers – MIL/Hindi, Four papers – Discipline 1, Four papers – Discipline 2            =72 Credits
  • Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (2 Papers of 4 credits each) -Environmental Science, (English-Hindi/MIL Communication)                                          =08 Credits
  • Ability Enhancement Elective course (Skill Based) (4 Papers of 4 credits each) = 16 credits
  • Elective Course (6 Papers of 6 credits each)-Two papers- Discipline 1 specific, Two papers- Discipline 2 specific, Two papers-  Generic(interdisciplinary) nature     =36 Credits
Total credits   =132
Note:-i)The Generic Electives (interdisciplinary nature)in the B.A. 3rd Year required to  be offered by the student will be other than the two Discipline Specific Courses already offered by the student.
ii) B.A. with a particular subject would require a student to study Skill enhancement courses (SECs) of that subject in the 2nd year & 3rd year
Course-wise Assessment and Evaluation of Students
All courses (Compulsory, Core, Elective, AECC, SEC and GE courses) involve an evaluation system of students that has the following two components: -
(i) Continuous Comprehensive Assessment (CCA)-It accounts for 30% of the final score that a student gets in a course. It further consists of following three parts: -
Classroom Attendance – Each student will have to attend a minimum of 75% Lectures / Tutorials / Practical’s. A student having less than 75% attendance will not be allowed to appear in the End-Semester Examination (ESE).The incentive for the classroom attendance (for those participating in Co-curricular activities, 25% will be added to per cent attendance) will be awarded CCA marks as follows (out of 5): - 
  • 75% to79%             = 1mark
  • 80% to 84%            =2 marks  
  •  85% to 89%           =3 marks
  •  90% to 94%           =4 marks  
  • 95% and above      = 5 marks  
Class Test- 5 marks for class test to be taken on completion of 40% syllabus by the class teacher.
Mid-Term (Minor) Test–10 marks for house test to be taken on completion of 75% of syllabus.
Seminar/Assignment/Tutorials and General Behavior of student-10 marks for assignments, seminar, tutorials and general behavior of student.
 (ii) Annual Examination
The remaining 70% of the final grade of the student in a course will be on the basis of the annual examination that will be for three hours duration and will be covering the whole syllabus of the course.  The annual examination will be held in the month of April/May. Only those students will be allowed to appear in the annual examination who has been successful in the CCA.
Note: 1. A student will have to pass both the components (i.e. CCA and Annual Examinations) separately to become eligible to be declared successful in a course.

Instructions for admission to First year of UG Pass courses under CBCS template of UGC for the academic session 2022-23:
1. The formation of the units /number of students in a class/subject remains the same as per the H.P. Govt.Notification of 2015, i.e. 1st unit/section of subject will be of 80 students and subsequent units/sections of 60each depending upon the availability of faculty in the colleges. The admission in different streams will bedone as per the HPU Roster.
2. The combination of elective subject chosen as discipline specific core can be allotted / given to the studentsas per the availability of faculty in the subject and infrastructure in the respective colleges.
